Illuminating debate on a potential treaty addressing business and human rights

Ecuador has triggered an international debate by leading a group of States and a coalition of international NGOs in calling on the United Nations to take steps towards adopting an international treaty addressed to business and human rights. The University of Notre Dame and the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre hosted a debate in London last week on this complex and divisive issue. It features many of the key personalities involved in business and human rights and neatly encapsulates many of the key issues:

A Treaty Alliance has also been created and is seeking signature for its petition, which aims at ensuring that the treaty initiative is progressed at the United Nations Human Rights Council (www.treatymovement.com).
